There’s no question social media marketing plays a key role in a business’ digital exposure. With 3.78 billion social media users worldwide, it’s an effective way to get your brand seen and heard.

But before you begin to craft a strategy, you first need to familiarize yourself with the top social media marketing platforms businesses use, starting with knowing what they are.

Leading the list of the top social media marketing platforms is none other than social media giant Facebook. According to a survey, as many as 93 percent of businesses use the network as part of their marketing efforts.

This comes as no surprise, considering its massive 2.8 billion active user base. Plus, not only is it the most popular social media platform, it’s also the network on which consumers spend the most amount of time.

The second-most popular social media marketing platform is Instagram, which, together with Facebook, is owned by Meta.

Survey results show that nearly eight in ten (78 percent) of marketers use the popular photo- and video-sharing app to promote their business. That said, if you’re thinking about using Instagram for business, make sure to do your research into the platform’s average engagement rates so you know what benchmarks to set for your brand.

Third on the list of the most popular social media marketing platforms is LinkedIn, with 61 percent of marketers actively promoting their businesses there.

Unlike Facebook and Instagram, however, LinkedIn is intended more for the professional space and caters to the corporate world more than Facebook or Instagram does.

Following LinkedIn are YouTube and Twitter, the fourth- and fifth-most popular social media platforms, respectively. Fifty-five percent of brands include YouTube in their marketing strategy, while just under half (48 percent) of them use Twitter.

In terms of usage, these top social media marketing platforms mentioned so far have quite a large lead over their competitors.

After Twitter, TikTok is in sixth place. Compared to the top five, the number of marketers using TikTok is relatively small, at nine percent. Nevertheless, it’s impressive that TikTok is even ranking among the top social media platforms for marketing, considering it was only launched relatively recently, in 2016.

Snapchat wraps up the list of the six most popular social media marketing platforms, with four percent of businesses present on the network.
