Despite being the manufacturer with the second-largest smartphone market share worldwide, South Korean phone maker Samsung is expected to top the list of the most popular phone brands this year in terms of expected shipments.

Recent data on the top smartphone brands ranked by the number of shipments shows that Samsung is forecasted to send out 276 million of its smartphone units in 2022. This is 1.1% more than the total number of phone shipments it made last year.

This is part of the company’s goal to grow its market share this year with the release of more 5G models. It’s hoping to ride on the wave of demand from consumers who are finally ready to replace their old devices as the effects of the pandemic wear off.

Samsung has been slowly increasing the total number of smartphone units shipped in recent years. In 2020, it shipped out 263 million units. This rose marginally to 267 million in 2021.

In second place, Apple is projected to ship out 243 million smartphones this year, a 5.4% annual increase. Like Samsung, it has been increasing its shipments in recent years. Its shipment growth numbers have even outperformed Samsung’s. In 2021, Apple dispatched 229 million smartphone units, 15.07% more than in 2020.

Third on this list of top smartphone companies (by shipment) is Xiaomi, which is expected to ship 220 million devices in 2022. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has been experiencing tremendous growth over the past couple of years and the numbers say it all. This 2022 projection represents a 15.8% year-over-year increase, less than half as fast as the 35.62% growth it experienced in 2021.

The company also reported record revenue growth of 64% in the second quarter of last year, during which it outperformed Apple to become the second-largest smartphone manufacturer.

The fourth-most popular phone brand is Oppo, with 208 million expected shipments this year. This marks a 2.5% annual increase, a significant slowdown from last year’s growth rate. In 2021, the company shipped out 185 million units of smartphones, 28.47% more than in 2020.

Rounding out the list of the top smartphone brands is Vivo, which is projected to ship 149 million devices, a 6.4% annual increase.

Of the five most popular phone brands, four are from Asia. Apple is the only non-Asian brand to make the list.
