To optimize your ecommerce store for online shopping, you need to know how users view your store. This means you’ll need to understand the most popular browsers used by consumers.

As of February 2022, Google’s Chrome is the leading internet browser in the world with a global market share of 62.78 percent. In other words, more than six in ten people use Chrome to browse the internet.

Apple’s Safari is in second place with 19.3 percent, 43.48 percentage points behind. Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft Edge are the next two most used web browsers. Both have market shares of just over four percent each.

Samsung Internet and Opera wrap up the top six web browsers in the world with market shares of 2.77 percent and 2.26 percent respectively.

Internet Browser Market Share by Platform

Zooming into the internet browser market shares on different platforms, Chrome continues to dominate as the most popular browser on desktops with a market share of 64.89 percent. This is similar to mobile phones, of which their market share is 61.95 percent.

But Chrome’s market share for tablets tells a different story. While it is still the most popular browser, its lead significantly narrows. At 46.87 percent, it’s just slightly more popular than Safari, which has a 38.48 percent market share.

This still marks a significant milestone for Chrome as March 2021 marked the first time that it overtook Safari to hold the largest internet browser market share among tablet users. In the one-year period from February 2021 to February 2022, the internet browser market share of Safari for tablets fell by 5.17 percentage points. Meanwhile, Chrome’s market share grew by 4.55 percentage points.

The market shares of the most popular browsers also vary according to region. For instance, Chrome and Safari continue to be the two most used web browsers in the US, but the gap separating them is significantly smaller than on a global scale.

Chrome’s internet browser market share in the US is 49.42 percent with Safari relatively close behind at 36.12 percent.

Rounding out the most popular browsers in the US are:

  • Edge: 5.8 percent
  • Firefox: 3.45 percent
  • Samsung Internet: 1.87 percent
  • Android: 0.81 percent
